Cosmic time marches on at a steady pace, audible as ticks on our clocks, and visible in the dial of any watch. But the silent onward flow of time is indifferent to the myriad processes and changes that are ceaselessly occurring in the physical universe to routine rhythm to the Laws of Nature.
We witness small subsets of these changes in this our minuscule earth in the vast expanse. Some of these are relevant to our personal lives, and some of significance to humanity at large.
In the long saga of human experience there have been many phases and periods of glory for some groups, despondency for others, or just routine humdrum for many for longs periods. There have also been times when whole cultures have felt insecure, occasionally envisioning an end to humanity itself. Indeed, we have had significant landmarks in our collective life-story, major turning points and revolutions that drastically changed the quality and course of human life.
Every generation in every culture has toyed with ideas, elated by hopes now and subdued by anxiety at others. Every generation has also grappled with themes and questions that have seemed to them to be of primary interest or concern. Perhaps what makes our own period unique in human history is that some of these matters have become global: that is to say, they have moved beyond parochial relevance into the larger arena of humanity.
In this series I plan to reflect on some of the terms and themes that have become current and concerning in our own times.
